Final display for degree show

Below are images of my display for my degree show.  It took some time to get the layout perfect and to suit my fabrics.  I used different techniques in order to display my work professionally and creatively.  I enjoyed this part as it was fun seeing the fabric collection displayed together.

Building Inspiration

At the moment I'm being inspired by buildings, especially if they relate to my fabric collection.  This building is newly built in the last year and the window panels give such coloured tone to the building.  The shapes are similar to my fabric samples and the overall pattern of the glass reminds me of my sketchbook "A bird's Eye view".  Although I'm not a fan of green the slight hint of it in the building works really well.

Handmade Cushions

From some of my left over samples I created some cushions for my display in the degree show to give the viewer an idea of what my collection of fabrics were for.  I am really pleased with the way they have turned out ad my fabric really suits the concept of a cushion.

Final collection

After my design seminar I was advised to create some plain jacquard samples to break up the colour in my collection.  These are most of my samples grouped together to give you a little preview of what will be displayed on my final degree show.

For the white fabric I used various honeycomb patterns to give texture and detail in the fabric.  I chose honeycomb because honeycomb has been used throughout my other samples linking the fabrics together as a collection.

Above are all the colour wrappings for the warps I have done through this semester.these warps have created samples that I will be displaying in my final degree show,  I have enjoyed creating these warps and the colours I have used are displayed throughout both sketchbooks.

Transfer printing experiements

My previous summer work placement gave me some simple zebra patterned trimmings that were not used in production due to the client cancelling.  There was such a wide range of colours I was able to find some in my own colour palette and decided to print on them to create new abstract designs.

Using disperse dye I was able to create a wave like pattern with the scarlet red dye to create the tie dye effect  I had in my woven fabrics.  Then using already made black transfer  paper I cut out blocked, graphical lines to create a grid like image to press onto my samples.  The method worked really well and I like the abstract effect it gives.  The original pattern wasn't destroyed but the trimming was enhanced added more depth and creativity to each sample.

Trimmings

For my final degree show I wanted to have some trimmings to complement my cushions, to give a variety to my display.  I used the hand loom to create the samples and simple but effective designs were created. I enjoyed creating these trimmings and I also experimented with the warp by creating little fringed trimmings which actually worked and look really sweet beside the trimmings.   these photos show the start of the warp but if you check out my website you can see the finished samples displayed there.

Kitchen turned into a workshop?

To get my fabrics ready for a photo shoot for our final degree show catalogue. This also allowed me to see the samples together so far and see if my collection was coming together. I also had the kitchen floor covered in water and attempted to stop this with every bucket I could find! But I discovered that I should base my collection on hand woven fabrics, on either the hand looms or texel looms where I have more control on what the fabrics look like and not limited to any effects of or colours I want to use compared to the jacquard machine.

Final warp for my cushion fabrics!

These are a few photos of my final weave of cushions for the degree show.  Each sample was doubled in size to fit a cushion. the warp was designed by my own experiences with the other warp palette, so colours that suited well were used.  it was basically the same as the previous warp but I removed the black from the red tie dye to allow the alternate colour change to look more noticeable than before.

Another week.. Another warp!

I seem to fly through my warps, with too many ideas to try and create samples with, as I knew what fabric samples I wanted to create I made these sample double the size ready to be made into cushions. I enjoyed weaving this warp and it allowed me to decide what to do for a final warp after wards.  Here are a few samples to give you an idea!

Just a little bit of accessory fun!

I found these cute little mesh flowers in La Droguerie - an amazing art craft shop that I wanted to stay in all day in Paris during my trip there in February.  I have now made them into like brooches so I can add them to a jacket or jumper to give it that little bit of uniqueness.

New Warp design

This is the coloured the warp for my new weave. The red is another warp that has been tie dyed continued on from the last fabric samples. The length is 6 meters, giving me plenty of length to experiment with colours and patterns. I shall have the samples up for viewing soon!

Tim Walker Exhibition

During a day trip to London I visited the Tim Walker exhibition - Story Teller.   Tim walker displayed  pieces of artwork that expressed his own childhood memories. I have added a link for you to have a look yourself - you really should! I loved his use of crazy bright colours and the colour contrast created in his work.

The Crystallized Roses and Cream Photograph was my favourite because of its use of tonal colours.  At the moment my work is showing a lot of dark colours but I was inspired by this photograph that I want to highlight more of the light colours in my colour palette.

I also noticed that he loved the colour red, using bright bold appearances of the colour throughout his work.  Red is not my favourite colour but I am actually using it in my studies at the moment and my attitude towards the colour is changing!  In some of Tim's work he has used the red with a hint of Gold, such as a rose or a button.  I liked this subtle but striking style in his work and I want to try and incorporate this in my own work.

First semester of final year

After deciding what kind of samples I want to create using the British Olympic flag designed by Damien Hirst,  the yarn was tie dyed and then by using the texel loom for the first time I was able to weave samples that were full of colour and shapes, giving an abstract effect that I really liked.  This was the starting point I needed to help develop the future samples for my final degree show.

Below is a link to my Flickr account for you to see my samples:
